Hangman
De misdaadfilm Hangman van regisseur Johnny Martin vertelt het verhaal van twee moorddetectives Ray Archer en Will Ruiney. Archer is gepensioneerd, maar kan zijn werk niet loslaten en Ruiney onderzoekt een slachtoffer die opgehangen is aan een boom naast een school. Op haar borst is een ‘O’ in het lichaam gekerfd. De moordenaar heeft van beide detectives hun badgenummer in een tafelblad gegrafeerd. Het is aan Ruiney en Archer om de moordenaar te pakken voordat er nog meer slachtoffers vallen. Met in de hoofdrol Al Pacino en Karl Urban.
Tijdens het onderzoek maakt journalist Christi Davies (Brittany Snow) een reportage van het werk dat Ruiney (Karl Urban) en Archer (Al Pacino) doen. Alleen bij het zien van het slachtoffer moet ze wel even slikken. Ze gaat gestaag door met de journalistieke insteek die ze heeft voor het verhaal. Alleen als kijker zie je haar eerder als derde wiel aan de wagen. Ze is niet echt een toegevoegde waarde voor het verhaal. Maar goed, naarmate het verhaal vordert worden er meerdere mensen opgehangen en hebben we te maken met een seriemoordenaar. Onder de naam ‘Hangman’, hij speelt galgje met de detectives. Dit wordt een kat-en-muis-spel dat hopelijk niet meer slachtoffers maakt.
Oppervlakkig
Bij het zien van deze film denk je al snel, nou dit wordt wel wat met Al Pacino in de hoofdrol. Maar helaas is dat deze keer niet het geval. Het verhaal is in het begin vrij traag en geeft weinig ruimte voor originaliteit. Het enige dat telt zijn de moorden. Er wordt niet zo snugger nagedacht welk patroon de moordenaar volgt en wat de link is met de hoofdpersonages. Het blijft een oppervlakkig verhaal zonder ingewikkelde dialogen. Af en toe is er een klein beetje spanning, maar dan heb je het ook wel weer gehad.
Dat is jammer, want ook Al Pacino presteert niet al te hoog. Het frisse en vlotte spel dat we gewent zijn van hem is hier niet aan de orde. Ook Karl Urban en Brittany Snow stelen niet de show. Maar liefst twee keer ontstaat er een interessante scene. Waarbij Urban en Pacino vel tegen elkaar in praten. En de scene waar de killer zich uit tegenover Pacino en Snow. Voor de rest vlamt het niet. Het blijft mat. Jammer. De soundtrack is tevens niet geheel passend. Soms klinkt er een driegend deuntje en de andere keer lijkt het net alsof je naar de soundtrack van Gladiator luistert. Het geheel hangt aan een zijde draad en dat is zonde, want deze cast kan zeker beter. Hangman draait vanaf 10 mei 2018 in de Nederlandse bioscopen.
